Waste is piling up and polluting the planet. Here are some ways to eliminate or reduce waste to save money, energy, and the environment.

Reduce – Take only what you need, for example extra ketchup packets or napkins are often wasted. Buy only what you need, for example clothing.

Reuse – Buy and utilize reusable over disposable items such as cleaning rags instead of paper towels. Repair and maintain products instead of throwing them away. Borrow, rent or share products that are not used a lot. Reuse school supplies from last year. Save packaging like boxes to repackage items.

Recycle – Recycle cans, glass, plastics, newspaper, paper, and cardboard.

Eliminate single use plastics – Use canvas bags instead of plastic; use reusable water bottles instead of plastic water bottles.

Paper – Paper comes from trees and requires processing. To conserve paper, switch to cloth napkins and towels instead of paper napkins and paper towels. Pay bills online and get e-receipts in stores. Print double-sided.

Compost – Food waste in landfills contributes to the methane released into the atmosphere. Compost your food waste at home. Food waste you can compost includes fruit, veggies, egg shells, and coffee grounds. Compost will provide natural fertilizer for your yard.

Second Hand– Buy second hand items or locally to reduce waste. Donate your own used goods. Donate books to schools or libraries, or toys to charities.

Conserve Water– Low flush knobs, faucet regulators, and not leaving the water running all help to conserve water.

Hazardous Waste

Dispose of toxic products properly.

Batteries– Contain acids, lead, cadmium, silver cells and mercury.

CRT-based Computer Monitors – Contain lead.

Fluorescent Lights – Contain mercury.

Pesticides/Fertilizers/Herbicides/Fungicides – Fertilizers can contain heavy metals like cadmium and zinc. Pesticides can contaminate water from spray drift, where wind blows the sprayed chemical into bodies of water.

Mercury Thermometers – Contain mercury.

Oil/Gas – Oil can contain contaminants like lead, zinc, cadmium and chromium. It can contaminate drinking water if poured down the drain or on the ground. Gas can easily ignite.

Oil-based Paints/Thinners/Stains – The Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in these products are harmful to the environment and human health.

Pool Chemicals – Release poisonous gas and can be explosive. Can make their way into the ground to contaminate water.
